Greek Beef and Spinach Bake with a side of Roasted Green Beans and a Lemon Wedge
Tips for Experienced Cooks
For an experienced chef, consider making your own beef broth for an enhanced depth of flavor. You could also experiment with substituting some of the dried herbs for fresh ones. Fresh oregano and basil can make the dish even more aromatic. Adding a splash of red wine while browning the beef can also elevate the flavors significantly.
Step 1: Prepare the Spinach
Wash the spinach thoroughly and remove any tough stems. Set aside to drain.
- 10 ounces fresh spinach
Step 2: Sauté Aromatics
Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 large onion (chopped)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
Step 3: Brown the Beef
Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain any excess fat.
- 1.5 pounds ground beef
Step 4: Season the Beef
Stir in the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Cook for another minute to release the flavors.
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 0.5 teaspoon salt
- 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
- 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Step 5: Wilt the Spinach
Add the spinach to the skillet and cook until it wilts, stirring occasionally. This should only take a few minutes.
- Prepared spinach from step 1
Step 6: Add Cream Cheese and Broth
Reduce heat to low. Stir in the softened cream cheese and beef broth until the cream cheese is fully melted and incorporated.
- 4 ounces cream cheese (softened)
- 0.5 cup beef broth (low sodium)
Step 7: Bake the Beef and Spinach
Transfer the beef and spinach mixture to a baking dish. Sprinkle with crumbled feta cheese and grated parmesan cheese. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Cooked beef and spinach mixture from step 6
- 0.5 cup feta cheese (crumbled)
- 0.25 cup parmesan cheese (grated)
Step 8: Roast the Green Beans
While the beef is baking, toss the green beans with the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil, salt, and pepper. Spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Roast in the oven along with the beef bake for the last 15-20 minutes, or until tender and slightly browned.
- 1 pound green beans
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Salt (to taste)
- Black pepper (to taste)
Step 9: Serve
Serve the Greek Beef and Spinach Bake hot, with a side of roasted green beans and a lemon wedge.
