Honey BBQ Chicken Stir-Fry with Brown Rice and Steamed Broccoli
Tips for Experienced Cooks
Experiment with the balance of flavors in the BBQ sauce based on your taste preferences. For instance, add a bit more honey for sweetness or a splash more of apple cider vinegar for tanginess. Also, consider marinating the chicken for longer, up to overnight, to deepen the flavor. You can also try adding a splash of bourbon or whiskey to the BBQ sauce for an extra layer of complexity.
Step 1: Make the BBQ Sauce
In a small bowl, whisk together the following ingredients to make the BBQ sauce:
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 3 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Step 2: Marinate the Chicken
Place the chicken strips in a bowl and pour half of the BBQ sauce over them. Toss to coat evenly and let marinate for at least 30 minutes.
- 1 lb chicken strips
- Half of the BBQ sauce from step 1
Step 3: Cook the Chicken
Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the marinated chicken and cook until browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Marinated chicken from step 2
Step 4: Cook the Vegetables
In the same skillet, add the sliced bell peppers and red onion. Cook for 2-3 minutes until slightly softened. Add the remaining BBQ sauce to the skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring continuously, until the sauce thickens slightly.
- 1 bell pepper (sliced)
- 1 red onion (sliced)
- Remaining BBQ sauce from step 1
Step 5: Combine the Chicken and Vegetables
Add the cooked chicken back to the skillet and toss to coat it with the BBQ sauce and vegetables.
Step 6: Steam the Broccoli
In a separate pot, steam the broccoli florets until tender, about 5 minutes.
- 1 lb broccoli florets
