Tips for Experienced Cooks

Experiment with different spices and herbs in the black bean burger mixture to tailor it to your taste. Consider adding a touch of smoked paprika or even some chipotle pepper for a smoky kick. For the corn on the cob, after grilling, brush with a mix of melted butter, garlic, and chili powder for an extra burst of flavor.

Step 1: Prepare Sweet Potato Fries

Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Wash and cut sweet potatoes into 1/2-inch thick fries. Toss with 1 tablespoon olive oil, salt, pepper, and smoked paprika. Spread on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until tender and slightly browned.

  • 2 large sweet potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika

Step 2: Prepare Corn on the Cob

Shuck the corn. Either grill, boil, or microwave the corn until tender. Grilling will give the best flavor.

  • 4 ears corn

Step 3: Make Black Bean Burger Mixture

Drain and rinse the black beans. In a large bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher. Dice the red onion and red bell pepper. Mince the garlic. Add the diced red onion, red bell pepper, minced garlic, chili powder, cumin, rolled oats, lime juice, maple syrup, salt, and pepper to the mashed black beans. Mix well until everything is combined.

  • 1 15-ounce can black beans
  • 1 medium red onion (diced)
  • 1 red bell pepper (diced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste

Step 4: Form Black Bean Burgers

Divide the black bean mixture into 4 equal portions. Form each portion into a patty about 1/2-inch thick.
